Lessons Learned from the Watermelon

This morning, Warren and I ran our third 5K for the Watermelon Series.  It was not pretty; it was not fun.  After Warren set a PR at the last race, he was determined (or so we thought) to PR this race.

But, you see, while I have been running three days a week, Warren has not.  Not even half way through the race, he was pretty sure he was going to die.  After tears during the race*, we walked (not ran, mind you) away having learned a few things:
  • I am much too competitive.
  • Practice with earbuds before the race.
  • You will live, even if your heart is beating 400 beats/minute.
  • Training (to run, not just to ride your scooter or swim) really is important when running a race.
  • There will be days when you have a bad race, and that's ok.
  • If things go wrong, pick yourself up, put it behind you and keep going.
  • Think happy thoughts!
  • Don't quit!
  • Finish strong!
  • Sometimes it's more about the relationship you're building with your son and what your teaching your son, than achieving a PR!
*Just to clarify, the tears during the race were from Warren, not me.
